Writing can be hard, frustrating, and scary.
But it can also be natural, intuitive, and life-affirming.
Whatever ups and downs you’ve had with your writing, it’s highly likely that I’ve had them too.
But you know what I’ve realized after a lifetime of writing?
I write better and stronger when I receive encouragement and constructive feedback.
I love helping people with their writing almost as much as I love to write.
It’s been a long and wild ride to reach the crossroads of writing and coaching. I’ve worked in 35 jobs, including 18 years in higher education as a career counselor, academic adviser, and prelaw adviser. I’ve sat down with people from all walks of life in more than 13,000 one-to-one sessions. I’ve critiqued hundreds of personal statements, essays, and stories. All of this, combined with being an author and blogger, makes me uniquely qualified to be a very different kind of Writing Coach.
People I Love to Help:
- Writers drafting a novel
- Writers drafting a memoir
- Writers drafting a non-fiction book
- Writers drafting the back cover summary for their book
- Writers starting or maintaining a blog
- Journalists drafting an article or opinion piece
- Students drafting a personal statement for graduate programs (law school, MBA, etc.)
Two meetings with Peg transformed my barebones movie idea into a screenplay treatment that’s tight, engaging, and marketable. She’s a joy to work with: smart, quick, dialed in – a fountain of great ideas and suggestions. She’ll help you be the best writer you can be. — John Davis, Writer & Screenwriter
How I Coach People:
I help clients in a direct, powerful way to improve their writing right here, right now, in the moment.
The magic is in the meeting.
Sessions take place over the phone or Skype. Prior to our meeting, you email me up to 5 double-spaced pages of your writing. First, I read your writing aloud so we can both hear how it sounds. Next, I ask you questions to winnow out the story you want to tell. Then, we zoom in on specific sections and discuss how you can improve them right here, right now. Throughout, I give you compassionate, direct, and constructive feedback.
If you don’t have a draft of your writing, sessions can be used for discussing, brainstorming, and dissecting your ideas, story structure, writing schedule, writing challenges, and more. I will listen deeply, ask you questions, and give you compassionate, direct, and constructive feedback.
Through many conversations with Peg, I was able to define my unique background into one well-written personal statement. Peg is an amazing listener and truly understands how to bring out the best message for each individual. — Jenna Caluza, University of Washington MBA & JD Graduate
